
Vitaly Bezhenar is the Head of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductology and the Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of the First St. Petersburg State Medical University, Russia.
He is a leading obstetrician and gynecologist in Russia, specially in the field of studying the pathophysiological mechanisms of the development of benign pathology of the female reproductive system, including genital endometriosis, minimally invasive methods of treating diseases of the female reproductive system.
He has authored more than 600 scientific papers, including the author and co-author of 29 monographs and 11 patents.
Professor Bezhenar has developed a new direction in clinical pathophysiology dedicated to the study of pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the development of severe forms of genital endometriosis in patients with chronic pelvic pain syndrome based on the assessment of sensitization to progesterone and proinflammatory cytokines of peritoneal fluid. The results of fundamental scientific research obtained by Vitaly Bezhenar allowed identifying new potential marker small RNAs in the material of the eutopic endometrium of patients with endometriosis for the development of an innovative test system for its predictive diagnostics.
He is the editor-in-chief of the journal “Effective Pharmacotherapy. Obstetrics and Gynecology”, a member of the Board of the Russian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the editorial boards of the journals: “Obstetrics and Gynecology”, “Journal of Obstetrics and Women’s Diseases”, etc. He is the Chairman of the dissertation council for the defense of dissertations for the degree of candidate and doctor of medical sciences in the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology. He is the chief specialist in obstetrics and gynecology of the Health Committee of the Government of St. Petersburg.
