Prof. Probhodana Ranaweera is a consultant and academic in Obstetrics and
Gynaecology, with special interest in medical disorders complicating pregnancy,
especially heart disease and autoimmune disorders in pregnancy, stillbirth care, and
minimally invasive surgery for benign gynaecological conditions. He introduced
“Rosebud care”, a comprehensive bereavement care package to streamline care after
stillbirth for the first time in Sri Lanka. He advocates making child birth a positive
experience with respectful maternity care.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 2005 with Second
Class Honours (Upper Division) and five distinctions, and earned his MD in Obstetrics
and Gynaecology in 2012. Prof. Ranaweera has many publications in leading global
academic journals such as BMJ, BMC, and PLOS ONE, and has co-authored several book
chapters with both local and international publishers. As a CEDA-UK accredited teacher
in higher education, he is actively involved in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and
postgraduate students across variety of learning settings. He was awarded and
recognised at many national and international platforms for the excellence in research
and teaching.
